"Nightingale" was my first Kristin Hannah book, and I gave it 5 stars.

Every subsequent book I've read by her has been less and less palatable for me. This one was a poorly camouflaged romance, and the 2 romances were beyond sappy.

Magic Hour
Kristin Hannah
Publishing Date: November 27, 2007

🎧 Narrator: Suzanne Toren 🎧

This was my in person bookclub’s selection for June. We are all big fans of Kristin Hannah so we’re excited to read one of her backlist titles.

It’s always an interesting experience to go back and read an authors earlier work. This book published in 2007, so nearly two decades ago!

I thought the premise was really interesting. Julia is a well renowned psychiatrist whose career just took a major hit. Her sister, who she is estranged from, works in law enforcement and calls her asking for help with a case. A little girl has emerged from the woods and no one can get her to talk. This “wild child” becomes front page news and Julia’s confidence and capabilities as a mental health professional are put to the test.

I think if Kristin Hannah wrote this book today, it would easily be a five star read. She has such a way of taking painful topics and writing them in the most skillful and heart wrenching way. However, her early writing style, choice of words at times, and dialogue just didn’t stand the test of time. If this wasn’t for a bookclub I likely would have DNF because this just isn’t the Kristin Hannah I want to read.

🎧 I read this one mostly with my ears and the narration doesn’t stand the test of time either. The narrators voice sounds much older than the characters are portrayed to be. I will say she did a nice job narrating the child portions.

Book Bingo 2025: Pacific Northwest Nature

I’ve been wanting to read this for a while, maybe due to my lifelong fascination with feral children. I’m not usually into mystery/thriller, but this turned out to be a lot more literary than I expected, with a lot of thoughts about motherhood and sisters. Definitely enjoyed. This is my first Kristin Hannah, and maybe I’ll need to check out more.
