It was a very predictable storyline from start to finish. It also did not do a good job of representing 2006-era knowledge of child psychology, despite the main character being a renowned psychiatrist. The discussion of autism for the first third of the book was pretty clearly limited to the author's knowledge, rather than what a psychiatrist would have known in 2006.

Heel goed boek. Vanaf bladzijde 1 zat ik erin en werd ik meegezogen in het verhaal. Einde was wel voorspelbaar.

i don’t tend to venture away from romance very often if at all. the only reason i picked this up was because it was the book of the month in my book club. but i’m so very glad i did. this was beautiful and heartbreaking. i can’t tell you how many times i cried as i read this. but in the end it was all worth it. i love alice and i will think of her for a very long time. julia as well. i know that this one will stay with me for a while.

One of the best novels I have listened to lately. I gleaned a new word for things I don’t like: Smelly. This book was heartbreaking and then had such a sweet ending I will probably have a bit of a book hangover and won’t be able to start another novel for a few days.

Good book, but slow read. Would read it but the plot is shallow and the book is long.

I’m working on reading Kristin Hannah’s backlist and this was so different from most of her other books that I’ve read. The concept was bizarre but entertaining. I liked the dynamic and relationship between Ellie and Julia. Two sisters finally finding common ground to strengthen their bond. I wanted more about Max. I feel like there was so much more to his story that was glossed over. The ending was pretty predictable but overall this was an interesting read and worth reading if you too are trying to read all of KH’s backlist.
