Probably my least favorite Mann novel, it reminds me of [b:the extra man|1885|Pride and Prejudice|Jane Austen|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1158963071s/1885.jpg|3060926] by jonathan ames but less funny. it seems like mann's humor needs to be tempered by some sort of novelistic ambition, like in the magic mtn.

The slowest book with the longest sentences and the most complicated descriptions I have ever read. As expected of Thomas Mann…

I am sorry for those you who saw the worst and best of my German major years. If you did you might think that I would never recommend a Thomas Mann book, but I am going to do just that. I hated Death in Venice and numerous other Thomas Mann writings, but this is more light hearted and a downright beautiful sarcastic work of art from one of the most neurotic and droning German authors ever.
