Some of these dour stories are too parochial, insular in theme or ambition. Some of them want for a sense of empathy for their characters.  The Dead is none of these things. It cuts straight to the heart of our shared joy and suffering and for that it's a high point of world literature.

I struggled with the book, but on reflection, it was more to do with the narrator than the stories.

This is such a quiet book, full of vivid characters and observations. Sadly, I didn't read this at quite the right time to fully appreciate it, but I did overall enjoy it. Joyce's writing is beautiful and insightful and at times incredibly moving.

This is a very good book (a shockingly original take). It’s a short story collection and each one has such a distinctive atmosphere, but the whole collection pulls together very well. I mean, it’s a literary classic for a reason.
