A beautiful and powerful read with one of the most relatable and honest depictions of anxiety and the effect it has on both the sufferer and their relationships with the world and people around them. There are passages in this book that were like a strangely cathartic sucker punch to the heart in the best kind of way. The therapy representation was also wonderful. Not only does this book tackle discussing mental health with nuance and compassion, it does so whilst superbly exploring the contradictions, stereotypes and expectations society places upon Black people dealing with their mental health. I have no doubt I will be rereading and tabbing/annotating this jn the near future because this book is something very special.

This novel-in-verse took me longer than usual because it is dealing with heavy topics. Normally I read verse novels pretty quickly, but I sat with this one longer than I usually do. Sadie, our narrator, is dealing with severe anxiety and agoraphobia, but still trying to figure out how she can be a part of a social justice cause in her town. The verse is done beautifully, and this book really has a strong emotional core.

What I appreciate about this book is the fact that Sadie wants to help at protests and help fight the social justice cause, and she finds a way to do that without always having to attend protests. For teens that might be in a similar situation to Sadie, I think seeing that play out in a book is powerful for them.

This book has changed my life. I have never felt more seen than reading this. As a disclaimer I am a white woman so I cannot relate to some of the specifics Sadie goes through, but the representation of anxiety I this book was so representative of my experience of anxiety and OCD. I listened to the audio book on Libby and I am going to be buying a physical copy this weekend. This is an important, amazing book and I think you should read it.
