The main character is unhinged and at times very problematic and insufferable. But as a reader, one could sympathize with her.

Yet, it was such a “fun” read. The novel gives great insight into the mind of a troubled and depressed person. But I was sometimes worried that this novel glamorized mental illnesses (as if being depressed was equal to being edgy).

the last chapter makes up for the rest which i don't even really remember. i don't think it was funny like it's marketed as and it isn't really absurd in an interesting way, kinda just odd & not very good at being odd. anyway i still enjoyed. it was a fun & easy read for me but not as deep or comedic as i thought it would be. i did enjoy some concepts related to the human experience that were somewhat explored. i also enjoyed the writing style & moshfeghs ability to portray the main character so well & show her inner monologue / thought process. additionally, i didn't really get bored at any point during this book which i think is impressive when you're writing about sleeping for a whole year which can be seen as a repetitive & boring concept. 3 stars from me ! ౨ৎ

Hard to categorize this book. The narrators pov is not an easy place to be- she is self absorbed, mean, narcissistic, and addicted to sleeping pills. She is also, as she often emphasizes, young, hot and rich. A large part of the book is “drug addiction, but make it fashion”. But it is well written and it does give a very close look at someone who could be a real person, complicated relationships, processing the death of parents and dealing with the void of the future after college.
Still, for “young woman with art scene connections wandering the streets of turn of the 21st century NYC and dealing with life”, id recommend people “The exhibition of Persephone Q” over this book.

The audiobook narration by Julia Whelan is excellent though.
