I think this book struggled to find the balance between romance and fantasy. Maybe my expectations were off, but I was expecting for a lot more from the romance. And while that was there, it definitely took a backseat to the fantasy plot; the mystery of the beast and the plight of the lashed. That would be fine, but that story wasn't really developed either. It also seemed to take place mostly in the background until the end. So what plot was at the foreground? Honestly, I don't know. It was like a sitcom episode with two B plots and no A storyline.
Even so, I thought it was fun. The characters are neat, I was rooting for all three pairings even knowing they were all doomed, and I am intrigued to pick up the next book.
