A wonderful evolution to the tale. I really enjoyed getting to read the story from another characters perspective, especially Lady who is so mysterious. It really feels like the story is opening up to a new stage now

ok! as it turns out, book #1 of the South, which appeared to be old wine in a new bottle, was really only the prelude to a whole new set of real badguys, with the 'good guys' (who are not so good) weakened. These books of the south have taken the black company through some alternative/post appocolyptic Africa & India in search of The Company's origin, which is only rumor and myth even to them...only to find that their origins are much more sinister, and outworldly, then anyone could even imagine. Full of demonology, court-intrigue, and Alexander-esq manifest destiny- The Black Company hobbles on in a race against old enemies and new.

I don't think Cook has too many new ideas for the Company. I want to believe he has an ending in mind for this series, but I've read too much fantasy and sci-fi to hold out much hope. That said...

This was a fun read. I loved getting Lady's point of view, including and especially her delightfully naive idea
that getting pregnant couldn't happen to her
. Lovely also to get a third person narrator
for Croaker. I was so happy to know he wasn't dead
.

I'm not *too* interested in the Shadowmasters' story, especially given Longshadow reads like a fragile narcissist. (redundant phrasing?) Meh, they're part of the story now, like it or not.

Looking forward to seeing how things progress after the closing of the Book of Lady.

About the Book: Lady has survived and is determined to unleash vengeance likes of which Shadowmasters have never tasted before. For herself, and for her beloved Company. But for might to be served, might has to be had, allies, followers, soldiers – found, armed, armored, and trained. And soon, before her enemies found her in this weakened state.

My Opinion: Solid writing, characters I genuinely cared for. But halfway through the book I could’ve quit and told you how it’ll unfold without reading any farther. With such hefty foreshadowing, and obvious things presented as secrets… Feels like author didn’t think much of the possible readers, which is just strange. Still, it’s a good story, hence I’ll read the rest of it, unless something horribly drastic happens.
