i love how the ending views intrinsic humanity (“…every human being has a basic instinct to help each other out”) but 14 years later, in 2025, i just don’t know if i believe it…also this reminded me a lot of the discussions post oceangate disappearance about who is deemed worthy of expending money/resources saving. that said i do really like this story!! classic scifi

Now that I’ve read this book, along with project Hail Mary, I don’t think I’ll be reading any more of this authors books. I understand his story telling and although, I loved project Hail Mary, I feel like it is the pinnacle of his structure and style. The further I am from the books, the more I dislike the ‘funny’ comments the characters make. Maybe I’m just in a bad mood or over it. I still recommend project Hail Mary which is not the Martian.

While the math was a bit heavy-handed at times, this was a great, intense, and fun read. Highly recommended.

How can someone write something like this?! There is a lot that I can pick apart in this book, but I’m going to focus on the genius of it because that part of it is that good! The whole book is mind boggling for someone like me who really only knows basic high school chemistry and physics.

In summery, the book reads like this: terrible problem that will lead to death, crazy scientific solution (I would skim these parts), solution worked, and repeat over and over again. There wasn’t much character development and really no sub plots, which could have easily been added. You’d think I’d give a book like that maybe 2 stars, but really the ending was great, the will to survive was inspiring and the fact that a writer could actually come up with this stuff is so incredible to me. I’d give it 4 stars.
