After hearing this book was based off a short story, a lot came into focus. While a two page story of similar plot would have been a worthy read, it did not make for an entertaining 300 page novel. The plot is fairly standard: boy meets dog, dog gets sick and dies, boy learns to live and love without dog.

The plot is relatively straightforward with a notable exception. In a bizarre departure to magical realism that does not echo the tone of the rest of the novel, boy and dog embark on an octopus hunt (the protagonist refers to the dog’s tumor as an octopus) and charter a boat on the sea.

Overall: oof. Not a fan.

This was the worst book I have ever read. It is a miracle I got through it. There are so many good reviews that I kept expecting it to get better and it never did. Very disappointed.

Sweet quirky book definitely shows the time with some racial things you wouldn’t write now like in the scene he goes into the Chinese restaurant. Otherwise would’ve given 4. It’s usoer sweet and has the
happiest ending ❤️
