What is the best MCU film? If you said Winter Soldier then you're a winner, and if you didn't then you're just incorrect. How did the source material hold up? Well, though it doesn't follow the exact plot of the film (which was somewhat expected) it impressed me more than I thought it would. I definitely got caught up in all the tension, which builds over the course of the plot. However it did feel as though it ended in a weird place, so the pay off wasn't quite there, though maybe this will be rectified in vol. 2.

Finally getting around to reading this, a series that’s considered a modern classic, and I can see why. Brubaker excels at writing espionage and he’s hitting on all cylinders here. If I have one minor complaint, it’s the reveal of who the Winter Soldier is. Marcus and McFeeley did it better in the film, but then they were working off of this excellent springboard.

I love the MCU, because it has been almost pitch-perfect in its adaptation of the source material. When you have stuff this good, I’m sure it makes the job both harder and easier. They can’t fit all the complexities of the book into a single movie, so they have to distill it. Superbly, I think. But that makes this book feel like the extended director’s cut, underscoring how everyone did their job so well.

Brubaker rules

I forgot just how amazing Brubaker's run on Captain America was. He's got the character down and this is only the first part of a pretty captivating story.

Captain America comes back from the dead to find out someone else has also come back from the dead and other people aren't dead that should be and someone wants to return him to the dead. This is good, but it's so clearly all setup.
The final issue in this collection is a nice story to end on.

I'm very late to the whole "reading the comics" thing, despite having being a MCU fan for over 10 years. There was a lot of gatekeeping, as well, with people telling me that I wasn't a "real fan" because I hadn't read the comics. Which did not make me want to read the comics. It made me want to avoid reading the comics. A few fans told me that I had to read the Brubaker Winter Soldier run, and when my library did a "read the book, see the movie" with Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier,  I decided to read the run.

It's quite interesting, though it's a graphic novel and I'm most assuredly not a fan of graphic novels. It feels like too many things are happening at once, which makes various individual stories difficult to follow. There's also a lot of lore that differs from the MCU.

All in all, a good place to start with the comics.

When the Red Skull is shot by a sniper, Captain America is called in to identify the body and verify that his longtime nemesis is dead. So it seems. However, there is some other enemy out there. Captain America has to work with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury to find who killed the Red Skull. And why are his memories coming back so strongly at this time? Excellent art brings this story to life. A good story overall. As this is the first volume, I will try to find the next volume. The only thing that kept me from rating it higher was the last interlude story at the end of the book, which deals with Jack Monroe. Just not as good as the rest.

One of the best comics I've read. Definitely a downer, but the art was good, the dialogue was good, and the story was good. I'll likely read the next volume at some point. I would definitely recommend this to comics fans or to fans of the Marvel movies.

I didn't like this comic that much... Mostly because the story is really serious and dark. I don't have anything against serious comics, but I think it's boring if the whole comic is serious.
