Differentiating between each book in the trilogy is going to be difficult having read them all back to back within just over a week however, I will try. If anything it speaks to the readability of the trilogy and its ability to pull you through the story with its characters and plot. While the first five chapters were quite world-building heavy leading to a slower start, once conflict was introduced I found I was wrapped up and transported to this strange faerie world adjacent to our own. I typically don’t gravitate to fantasy books that are in some way rooted in the real, or as they would say ‘mortal’, world but I found in this case it was well linked in and didn’t remove the belief of the main storyline. Having the history of the main character rooted in the real world placed in the faerie world allowed the voice of Jude to almost seem more real in tone. She’s describing what its like growing up in a fantasy setting with the disclosure of ‘I know this is somewhat ridiculous but this is how I have to live to survive in this weird place as opposed to the mortal world’. Alongside the idea of tone and world-building, the pacing of this book was great. Once the storey was introduced there was a natural progression through the storey that didn’t linger in unnecessary detail. For example, if the characters were moving from one place to another without trouble it would say so and the next paragraph would be at their destination, or if their journey was spoken about in more detail, you as the reader understood it was because something was going to happen. This really helped build tension in moments where typically nothing would happen, but its being spoken about so clearly something must but you don’t know what. On top of this, I didn’t find the story to be over predictable, some elements were easily guessed as you fall into a rhythm of understanding the world that’s been described to you but other thing would happen that you wouldn’t have suspected.

I will say, if you like description heavy and detailed books this one isn’t for you. It’s fast paced and great to scratch the fantasy itch if you want a lighter fantasy read.

In terms of characters, this is great. I typically find it hard to dislike characters that you are supposed to not like by design however, multiple characters in this book had my blood boiling. This varys from those that are actually horrid in who they are and what their intentions are but also in those that you love who do horrid things. Such as a sibling. Who continually fucks you over. But your family. So you love them. But you also hate them. I am never normally one to condone violence but I was happy for it to take place in this book because honestly it was well and truly deserved. In terms of character progression, a lot of this book felt like a set up for greater things and although it had its own plot that was carried through to completion, you ended on a note that had you questioning who these characters are and what’s next for them. There is a hint that we don’t know everything about their true alignments and where they stand with their sense of self, especially the main character Jude. We start with her sure of herself, moving to questioning what it means to be who she is in the faerie world, working to become more confident only to scheme her way to where she wants but unsure of herself once again.

jude duarte remains an absolute icon, she's so cool
