I have to wonder if the reason this isn’t listed as young adult is because they’re worried it will be burned.

Picked up off a friend's suggestion, felt longer than it was and not in a great way, felt a bit like a novella that has been stretched for time by adding a lot of travel and set dressing.

Despite this book not having a YA tag, it really should. It feels like it’s written for a younger audience and I felt like I wanted wayyy more than what was on the page. I think the world is imaginative and I enjoy aspects of the magic and world-building, but the lack of detail really made it boring for me as an adult reader. This could easily be twice as long!

A fabulous premise that is begging to be made into a film. In fact, it might make a better movie. Lorel is a sweet and kind-hearted heroine, but she’s a bit tedious to listen to. While I was enraptured by the world Killjoy has created, with its horrifyingly fascinating magical creatures and many evildoers, the writing of Lorel’s thoughts is often tediously self-aware and simple, and the constant traveling means we don’t get as much in-depth world building as we’d want. The pacing of her adventures I think would lend itself beautifully to visual storytelling, and the themes of self-acceptance and the complexity of Lorel’s decision to pursue a physical transition or not, are incredibly relevant to all youth, but especially vital for our trans babies. Definitely YA, even though I found it on an adult fantasy shelf.

One Sentence Review: There's a deep giddiness that I feel reading something that would absolutely piss off a TERF.
