slow start, but great read for young people; a lot of the story is lorel’s figuring out how to be a person among people, oscillating between observing others and active self determination. 
lore is incredible; what it means to transgress in consort with reverence and pursuit of stronger connectedness with community is written beautifully. the arguments made by characters about hierarchy, gender, and violence are good. 
this work is 1/3 dense(in a momentum stuttering way) inner thoughts; the remaining space being beautiful worldbuilding and the power of friendship/collective power.
