Beautifully written story. Lorel's journey both of being a witch and of self discovery is detailed wonderfully.

The themes of hope and resilience are exactly what I and other queer folks need right now.

I got bored but kept reading for her character development. I do like how the witches fight with axes and some turn into creepy creatures from too much magic

I enjoyed this, especially in hearing the voice of a trans character who has no doubt about her gender yet still feels the fear of being "found out." This is, in a good way, a slower-paced and quieter fantasy story than I'm used to seeing in recent YA books. It reminded me more of the fantasy books I read growing up in the 90s (which dates me) in its tone and pacing. The young characters encounter death, evil, and difficult choices, and the outlook could even be considered poor, yet they ultimately decide that people in every time have to stand against the darkness, and those people are usually literal or figurative witches, which I found ultimately hopeful.
