Best 500 fils (1.3 Dollars) ever spent on a book.

A haunting story that starts out with a death row prisoner in a maximum security prison. We don't know his name or what he did, but we go through life in prison as he sees it.

This book talks about the horrifying things done in prison and how bad men are created long before that. It is about an investigator who uncovers the horrible truth hidden away in the past and her efforts in trying to save some lives even if it's done by just listening to the prisoner's point of view.

“Inside, the lies you tell become the person you become.” - Rene Denfeld

The unnamed prisoner creates a magical world in prison that allows him to withstand the suffering of being locked up alone, without access to fresh air or human contact. These magical realism elements help him throughout his time in his cage.

It is a dark, haunting and beautifully written book. I have a feeling that some events in this book were based on a true story since the author was a death row investigator herself.

This book is hard to recommend because it is a story about many dark and terrible things. But it spins a tale full of beauty and humanity and hope in the most unlikely and dehumanizing places. Beautiful and tragic and oftentimes horrifying and I won't forget it. Not eager to read it again, but I am glad that I found it.

This book is overflowing with powerful emotional imagery. That is to say, imagery of the characters emotions. I found myself weeping inside over their struggles, and being filled with love and happiness in the midst of their... can I call them victories? It’s books like these that leave you feeling more human, more connected to those deep feelings inside you that make you human.

For such a heavy subject matter this book is written beautifully. It reads like poetry and I didn't want to put it down.
I'm always skeptical when a book is narrated by a character in a book who has more insight than what someone would truly have into other people's minds and events they are not present for but this was done so well that I didn't even think about it once I was into the book.
The mix of such a dark place with fantastical ideas was an interesting juxtaposition.
Honestly, I can describe this book as gorgeous, despite the awful things that the characters have done or went through. While there is mention of these things, it is with small detail that is not explicit.
The insight to a prison life feels well informed, and I trust is, based on the author's past work.
There is a reveal at the end that makes you think back and try to find clues that may have given it away. There is some closure or gratification that you get within some of the ending events, that I can always appreciate.
