Garbage.
Sorry, let me be more thorough.
Unlikable stupidly written characters with a plot that doesn't have any end goal.
Seriously, there's no "big bad", it's just this "forever war" and, stuff happens to our main character that has nothing to do with anything.

Hi I'm shagging the leader
We kill these animals and use their skin to make...drums...which are the guns in this book (which in my mind looks SO FUCKING STUPID. I mean really, imagine running towards your enemy and being like "hang on, check out this sick beat" - awful)
Oh no I got some people killed and saw some magic
Oh no I'm exiled
Oh the magic people who we thought were dead have captured me and they like the animal things. I'm sure this isn't the same magic I saw before.
Spoiler, it is.
Oh no the leader hates me, bet we won't shag
Spoiler, they do.
Oh by the way my sister also "exists" as does this army guy who for some reason came with us. Bet they won't shag
Spoiler, they do.
ONLY FAE BOND WITH THE OBEDIAH THINGS
Bet our main character won't bond with one
Spoiler, she did.
Theres your exposition...right?
So now what, is there a big bad to rise up against? Is there something really important happening that might change the world? Do we have ANY kind of goal to work towards???
Nah let's do some training where we magically learn skills that normally take years to master. Oh and some fucking.
Random guy who has no substance to anything turns out to be some kind of bad guy, I'm sure there will be a big fight and oh he's now turned to stone in one page. Guess that threat's neutralised.
Sister learns some more divination bullshit, who cares
Oh the magic will hold as long as the queens are alive, they won't die!!!
SPOILER FUCKING ALERT GUESS WHO GO DIE DIE
Making fera the queen, so your girl is now shagging royalty.
La la la she leaves to go tell her old home about the war stuff.
This couldn't end soon enough - I was excited to read it and the trilogy - I won't be touching books 2 and 3 unless my bollocks are being clamped and I need some form of distraction - even then it would be a challenge.
Predictable overdone trope bullshit with no substance or plot, with characters that have been written with all the charisma and likeability of a shit filled dog poo bag.
0* if I could - so this 1* is a pity star.

Not what I was anticipating, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but not what I was looking to read.

I think everybody should read this book. It’s literally everything I’ve been looking for, an ACTUAL queer enemies to lovers (where they start off as enemies and don’t immediately fall in love with each other.) amazing political intrigue. Amazing character development and romance. 1000000/10

I found one of the character POV's to be annoying. Nevertheless, the story did pick up and I was mainly engaged.
Although the twist at the end was revealed quite conspicuously. Could have been done better in my opinion
Undecided whether I will continue the series at this point.
