This was an emotional and beautiful experience to read. The detailed and in depth exploration of family trauma, grief, addiction, religion and finding meaning was phenomenal. I loved the non linear fashion of the narrative and felt being inside Giftys’s head to be so realistic and raw. Her journey of self discovery was harrowing at times but I loved seeing her find herself and start to open up and work through her and let go of her trauma. An important glimpse into the life of a immigrant family from Ghana. Also loved the family dynamics between characters and how it showcased hoe they affected eachother.

This book was absolutely incredible. A couple of friends and my journalism teacher suggested it to me, so I decided to read it. It's probably one of the best books I've ever read. The struggles of Gifty, the main character, ranging from her neuroscience research to her family life to her experiences with religion as a Ghanaian immigrant in Alabama, are all gut-wrenchingly emotional yet so real. Gyasi is a genius with the way she weaves the story between journal entries and anecdotes from throughout Gifty's entire life, and she can string together some of the most beautiful sentences I've ever seen. Without a doubt her talent makes the characters even more real and the stories even more powerful. I really want to read more from this author. Truly, this was an amazing book.

Thinking about the book a few months later: a very forgettable read.

 Beautifully written. Compelling. Powerful.

I'm not spiritual or religious at all, so a lot of this book didn't quite his the mark for me because I just couldn't relate to that aspect.

But otherwise it was a powerful read about trauma, pain, and familial relationships.
