Beautiful and tragic story, really well researched and great pace. I didn't love it the same way I did Homegoing, but they're such different books that it's not really appropriate to compare.

Be preparing to invest your time if you begin this book; slow going as main character struggle with painful past and depressed mother during frequent flashbacks to childhood.

I knew this author was something special after reading her first book, but this one is even better.

An in-depth interesting look at the relationship between religious belief and science and how they are not mutually exclusive.

It’s also an exploration of the effects of racism on mental health, and how the trauma of experiencing racism affects different people in different ways.

Also it has a pretty cover so there’s that too - read it!!

I found this book to be so different than what I was expecting. It is so understated in a way that you only really see the whole picture by the end of the book. It tells stories we don't hear often, if not at all, and there is not necessarily a blatant lesson it is trying to teach you, which is really beautiful because not all books have to teach you lessons. Not every story ends with a beautiful arc and a happy ending, sometimes stories just need to be told because they are lived experiences you could never understand any other way. This book a look into the lives of a rather small circle of people, well one person, but Gyasi does so in such a thorough and intense way that it feels so intimate and personal, so detailed. And the time-changing and structure is really flawless.

It truly is a beautifully tragic book.

A really beautiful, if depressing, read. It started off so wonderfully, with sumptuous language exploring the relationships between faith and science, between depression and addiction and the heritage of trauma. I felt like it lost its way a little towards the end, and I really didn't like
the final chapter which included a look into the future and which revealed that Gifty has a semi-happy ending

Overall, I found this book to be a little disappointing; I felt like I'd read similar things in the past done to a better, fuller and more detailed final product. The one thing which sets this book apart is the religion versus science debates, and I felt like there was more room to speak about their specific incompatabilities. It was a nice, easy summer read, and I enjoyed it but I had really high expectations after the reviews I'd read.
