A must read for Wodehouse fans. Most unique, clever epilogue ever

Themes: Love, farming, friendship
Setting: 1920s English chicken farm in the country

I just finished this on audio. I was so pleased to find it at the library, as there's nothing a like a funny book to take your mind off your troubles. Unfortunately, this was not quite as funny as I'd hoped.

Jeremy Garnet is working on his next book when an old friend shows up to invite him in to his latest venture - a chicken farm in the country. Ukridge and his new wife know nothing about chickens, but they are persuaded that that will actually be a benefit, as they are free to run the farm on entirely new lines. Now they need Garnet to join them.

Garnet agrees, and is off to the country. On the train he briefly meets and is smitten by a beautiful girl. He meets her again in the country, but the romance has a few pretty funny obstacles to overcome.

It was a funny book, but it's obvious to me that it is an early Wodehouse book, before he really got going. Still worth a read or a listen, but it was nowhere near as good as Jeeves and Wooster. 3 stars

The story of Jeremy Garnet, a writer, who fails to escape Stanley Featherstonhauh Urkridge's latest scheme, a chicken farm. Urkridge's isn't bothered with their total ignorance of farming; it frees them of pre-conceived ideas. Nor is lack of capital a problem since they are sure to get rich quick on credit. Garnet's novel commends him to the Professor's daughter whom he woos despite many misadventures.
I had to put this book down a dozen times. I was laughing so hard I couldn't bear to continue.

Very entertaining

I stumbled on a P. G. Wodehouse at a guest house years ago. I was desperate for something to read, so I blew the dust off the cover and fell in love with the writings of P. G. Wodehouse. I love his dry sense of humor, his portrayal of England in the 1920's, and his way with words. This book is apparently the first he ever wrote. I'm not even sure how to describe it: a questionable but lovable business partner, getting on the wrong side of the father of the girl you've fallen madly in love with, winning the girl, but then how to win the father. It's just an enjoyable light-hearted read.
