An Afghanistan war vet, Rye Mallett works as a "freight dog", a pilot willing to fly anything, anywhere, at any time, regardless of the dangers. Rye's current job delivering a mysterious black box in dense fog goes awry from the start. First, his plane crashes due to sabotage, and then the wrong doctor arrives to accept the package. Soon Rye and Dr. Brynn O'Neill find themselves in a race against time to deliver the box with both the police and an unknown pair of thugs on their trail.

This is classic Sandra Brown in the vein of her older romantic suspense works, such as Mirror Image and Exclusive

Rye is similar to many Brown heroes. Gruff, broody and reclusive, he is determined to maintain his distance from others, but a strong core of honor and integrity means he cannot resist aiding those in need. Brynn is intelligent and resilient with a profound need to make a difference. Her willingness to sacrifice her life's work for the greater good makes her a very appealing heroine. Rye and Brynn get off on the wrong foot, but their snarky bickering conceals an intense attraction that leads to its inevitable conclusion.

The secondary characters are well-developed from the small-town cops determined to get to the truth to the vicious thugs with their own motivations and the intended recipients of the box who evoke conflicting emotions -
SpoilerI initially sympathized with the senator and his seemingly loving wife before their intentions are revealed

The intrigue surrounding the strange black box keeps the pages turning even though some of the plot points do not initially make sense. That said, it all ultimately comes together cohesively. The chapters leading up to the climax are heart-poundingly intense and the final twist at the end is the icing on the cake.

Overall, a gripping story with engaging characters and an interesting message.

3.5 stars for an entertaining suspense thriller, with romance thrown in for good measure! Great holiday read. This is my first Sandra Brown book, but definitely won’t be my last!

Brown fan but this one just didn't do it for me. It felt tedious. I didn't care about any of the characters and found the heroine annoying. I had more feelings toward that flight jacket than I did the kid, so there you go.

I was on a long car trip and finished the last of my books so I bought what seemed to be the only book in the grocery store that didn’t have a naked person on it. Since it had a plane on it, I had some hopes for it, but I am not the right person for this book.

For a book with a plane on it, there was not nearly enough flying in this book. There was, however, an absurd plot that didn’t so much zigzag and wallow around aimlessly (weren’t they on a tight deadline? How convenient that they had planned 24 hours of wiggle room so the book could be longer).

And I’m definitely not the right person to evaluate the romance, but can we stop with the pretending we hate each other? And the objectification of peoples bodies?

Also, I never realized it was possible for one pilot to have all the hazardous mental attitudes at the same time. So I did learn something, I guess.

I can't decide if it was the narrator or the story that bored me in giant clumps. I admit to skipping big parts but don't feel like I missed any of the story. I had given up on this author several years ago, as all of her books felt vaguely familiar. I guess she still is not for me.

Review:
Even tho this was only The 2nd Novel ive read in the past 2 years, i was so hopeful that i'd love this one since i really enjoyed The Switch when i read it in Fall 2021 but sadly this one fell flat for me and felt it was a big disappointment.

The Characters were fun and interesting to read about. I couldnt pick just one character as my favorite since i seemed to enjoy all of them.

The Setting was OK but wasnt much description about it which i think is why this book was so disappointing to me.

Overall it was OK but i expected so much more from it!! I do wish there had been more excitement in the chapters. I will read more by Sandra Brown in the future but i hope all her other books arent like this one was.
