I very much enjoyed reading this book, however I did have some problems with it. The first being the murder, yes I know murder is a major part of being a pirate, but what I didn't like about it was how flippant it was dealt with. I would much have prefered this book be made for an adult audience and actually be fully dealt with. On the flipside the spice was just too much for me, for a YA book. Again, I would much rather have had this book be an adult book and go full out in all aspects.

I'm not the biggest fan of first person and at first I didn't mind it. But by 50 pages in I got the inkling that this book would do a lot more telling instead of showing.

Lastly, the last 70ish pages . . . I couldn't wait for it to be over.

This book had me giggling and kicking my feet. There are some awful characters (they're pirates so some of them are shit heads) but I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the story! I had a great time with every page!

This story was just as amazing as I remember! The first time I read this book it was in one sitting while at a library with my friend. I was really into YA books at the time (still am, but not as much considering how the YA genre has changed in the last ten years) and this book ticks all the boxes of a great YA book. Alosa is such a fun character, one who knows what she wants and will do anything to get it. She is powerful, snarky, stubborn and so well written. As soon as you meet Alosa you would do anything to join her crew of women who sail across the sea looking for adventure. And the beauty of books is that as the reader you get to follow her on adventures and sail with her on her ship. So far this series is all I’ve read of the author, but I do own many of her other books strictly because of how incredible this book is. I would encourage anyone who misses what the YA genre used to be to pick up this book, you won’t regret it for a single moment.

The plot was fast paced and entertaining. I was intrigued by the FMC’s goal and tactics. I enjoyed the humor and internal dialogue.

After reading parade/nautical books in the past, I wish there was a little more of the sea faring details. I wanted to have the essence of life on the water… Instead it felt like they were on land or docked the entire time.

The magic is intriguing and I can’t wait to learn more. I feel like it’s only the tip of the iceberg.

The characters are fun and I enjoy that there are elements being held back. The FMC’s sassiness and grit makes her enjoyable. I even enjoy that she is so cut throat. She has to be as a Pirate Captain. I’m interested to learn more about her upbringing.

The relationship between the brothers is still a mystery to me, but I like the contradictory nature of the MMC and how he seems to be internally struggling with the pirate way of life. I’m interested to see his development in the next book.

One issue I had was with the book claiming to be the female equivalent to Jack Sparrow. The FMC is definitely not. I also wish there was a little more world building. The intricacies to how this world works under the Pirate King could have been flushed out more. So much of it seems a little vague.

The other issue I had was the believability that the most feared and skilled in the book were under 20. That an entire crew was so young was just asking too much. It made certain people stick out like a sore thumb, thus completely obvious.

But it was a fun read and I highly suggest it for younger teenage readers.
