If nothing else it was a fast paced book about pirates that I could get through in a day. While a strong female pirate for the lead was mildly entertaining, the romance was built on cheap tropes and undercut her strength and wit as a character. It was at times hard to tell if the novel wanted to by a YA novel with its simpler adventure plot or an adult fantasy given some
of the dark and/or adult themes and potentially triggering content.

Thank you to Pushkin Press and Netgalley for the review copy in exchange for an honest review. This does not change my opinion in anyway.

I had high expectations of Daughter of the Pirate King. I've always loved pirates and I do love Pirates of the Carribean. However this book did not live up to it.

Alossa lets herself get kidnapped by this pirate crew to retrieve a map. But she finds a little more than she bargained for in her captor Riden.

And if that doesn't sound like a recipe for a romance I don't know what does. A lot of my problem with this book is regarding the romance. Not only are they violent towards one another, Riden lets his brother take her to hurt and rape her. I don't know how that is suppose to make a good basis for a relationship.

A lot of the moments in the first three quarter are the book are also there to serve for the romance. Riden taking a prisoner in his room is just bloody stupid. Letting a prisoner walk around your ship for multiple nights to see what she is up to is even worse. I'm sorry but in that regard these were a bunch of stupid vanilla pirates. Everything is worked around to fit for the romance and making Alossa seem super great. It is obnoxious in every way.

Lets not talk about the world building because there isn't much there.
