The plot was fast paced and entertaining. I was intrigued by the FMC’s goal and tactics. I enjoyed the humor and internal dialogue.

After reading parade/nautical books in the past, I wish there was a little more of the sea faring details. I wanted to have the essence of life on the water… Instead it felt like they were on land or docked the entire time.

The magic is intriguing and I can’t wait to learn more. I feel like it’s only the tip of the iceberg.

The characters are fun and I enjoy that there are elements being held back. The FMC’s sassiness and grit makes her enjoyable. I even enjoy that she is so cut throat. She has to be as a Pirate Captain. I’m interested to learn more about her upbringing. 

The relationship between the brothers is still a mystery to me, but I like the contradictory nature of the MMC and how he seems to be internally struggling with the pirate way of life. I’m interested to see his development in the next book. 

One issue I had was with the book claiming to be the female equivalent to Jack Sparrow. The FMC is definitely not. I also wish there was a little more world building. The intricacies to how this world works under the Pirate King could have been flushed out more. So much of it seems a little vague.

The other issue I had was the believability that the most feared and skilled in the book were under 20. That an entire crew was so young was just asking too much. It made certain people stick out like a sore thumb, thus completely obvious.

But it was a fun read and I highly suggest it for younger teenage readers.

What can I say? I love piracy. I also love slow-burns and enemies-to-lovers.

I do wish there was a little more diversity in the characters, both in their backgrounds and their characterizations. I feel like more variety would help Riden stand out more. It also might have helped highlight the complexities of politics at sea.

Alosa being half-siren was also not that well done, imo. I wish it was either known to the reader from the start, or been brought forward more somehow as key to the plot. It may be improtant yet, but within the context of this book, you don't really care about sirens until you realize Alosa is one. You aren't even sure that they're real the way Alosa speaks about them. Without that sort of tension or build up, the reveal falls a bit flat.


That said, it's only book one. If you like pirates and you like a good slow-burn romance, this'll do the job well.

Riden and Alosa are everything.

Their prisoner/captor dynamic? Straight out of my before-bed scenarios. And
he takes her to his room?!
 

There's definitely some content warnings regarding both gore and smut. Nothing super graphic, but multiple men try some things.
She doesn't castrate Draxen, though. The power of love for Riden, I guess.


The book has highs and lows because some intense emotions are explored, but there's plenty of comedy relief to counteract that.

Just/ everything really.

Phenomenal characters. Unique scenery. Epic battles. And so much fun. 

* One criticism, though (why it's not 5 stars), this book was published in 2017 and there is so much heterosexuality and gender binary- It's hard to wade through. I mean, it's literally part of Alosa's abilities, but the constant "men fall under my spell" and "I can make men do what I want" and no effect whatsoever on any of the women on her crew? It's tiring.

Oh, and the apparent only gay man in this entire world?
Dead pretty dang quickly. </>

I really enjoyed this YA piratical fantasy! There were a lot of fun twists throughout, though I predicted almost all of them. I liked the depth of the story and the details of Alosa’s character. The characters seemed older than they were (17 and 18?? Yeah, they didn’t act that age). I wish there was more romance!! I’m excited to read the next book and see what happens next.
