I was promised to read the best fantasy novel ever, which was a bad set up, therefore i can only give this book 4⭐. It was a great book, but I was expecting it to be outstanding. When i found the same themes that are in every fantasy book, i felt somewhat disappointed. However, there were moments were i thought "damn, finally someone whos not following the text book of how to write a fantasy novel. It was very engaging, there was only one time i didnt feel like continuing it, but that also had to do with lack of time. It's fast paced, in the sense that quite a few years pass in the first half of the book, which i thought was very rushed while reading - in hindsight i think it was necessary and well done. I also love that R. F. Kuang did plenty of research about the japanese/chinese war, you can really see that she knows a lot about this topic when reading the book!

what really put me off, though, was the immaturity of the protagonist. I'm guessing shes around 16 to 17 years old, but I thought since it's maketed towards adults, ths protagonist will be more mature. I found her a little annoying sometimes, but i want to continue reading, because the last pages made me think, that maybe its just a necessary character trait (not immaturity but something more like hot-headedness), which is going to make the story very interesting.

definitely gonna clntinue this series and can recommend it :)
oh but it's very graphic and brutal at times, look out for that!

this book…i mean wow. i have so many thoughts but i’ll cut it short, it was everything they said it would be but at the same time it wasn’t. the book was so incredibly written and the plot and characters were so intricately developed, the story unfolded in a way i didn’t expect. i honestly don’t think i’ve ever had such an immersive reading experience before. yes it was as dark and violent and gory as they said, i was warned but i didn’t listen (i beg you, heed the tws, especially for the infamous chapter 21). now this is what it wasn’t: they love to rave about how rin is such a badass etc. but this is not what this book is about, it’s nothing short of a TRAGEDY! the heaviness of this makes my head swirl with a million thoughts.
so much for keeping of short lol.

i actually mourn for rin the most, i feel like she’s turned into something from a nightmare, sigh

i am absolutely speechless.
I was already obsess with this book but given the historical references of the sino-japanese war and the Nankin massace,  i have to acknowledge what a genius R.F Kuang is. She mastered an incredible world building, along with profound and decisive dynamics between the characters. The complexity of Rin's moral and ambition is unsettling and nonetheless crucial for the story. Furthemore, the melding of Chinese history and the opium war with the shamanic system that The Poppy War offers is fascinating.
Chapter 21 is one of the hardest piece of literature i've ever read, it truly shows the atrocities of war and men.
I'm looking forward to the sequel but i can tell it will be just as devastating if not more
