BIZARRE, STRANGE, WEIRD… FANTASTIC!
This may have been the oddest thing I’ve ever read, and it WORKS.
Firstly, I’ll say that you should trust the content warning on the cover. Some of it was definitely disturbing to look at, though again, in… weird ways. Yet all the bizarre things within the story is what makes Dandadan work!
We mostly follow two students in this first volume (with an introduction to a family member of some importance to the storyline as well) as they discover the freaky and unexplained. Like, they literally face both a spirit and aliens at the same time.
Do I think it’s weird that the unnatural things they have faced so far were so sexually focused? Um, yes. I do. And if that might bother you, Dandadan may not be for you. But nothing is actually taken past ‘the line,’ so to speak.
I don’t REALLY know how to explain this well, because its strengths also make it very difficult to properly describe without straight up spoiling things, but what I will say is that I’ve never read anything like this before and I will 100% be picking up volume two as soon as I am able. And maybe that’s exactly what’s needed to be said.

Two teens, a dare, and now aliens and spirits are everywhere.
At the point of writing the anime is still airing and I started watching it. So happy that Netflix had it! And now that I have the Deluxe Plan of MangaPlus, well I had to give the manga a shot as well and see how that one is going!
Well, there are some differences between the manga and anime, but only little ones that don’t distract from the story. Things like how in the anime the UFO landed on the road in a burning heap whereas in the manga the UFO is on the hospital. I am definitely going to have fun watching and reading at the same time-ish and see what more differences/bonus extras are added to either of them.
In this one we meet a gal named Momo Ayase, and a occult-obsessed boy named Okuran (his actual name is Ken Takakura, but since Momo is a total fangirl for the actor with that name she forces him to be called Okuran, haha). She saves him from bullying, but that leads to him thinking that she is into him. And that again leads to a dare (because he believes in aliens and she believes in spirits) which leads to her almost getting alien-raped and him getting cursed by a turbo-granny (who btw cursed him by taking his penis, yes, really). Cue a lot of chaos as the two of them fight aliens/spirits to get Okuran back to normal, or well, normal-ish. Haha. It was a delight to read this one and see the two of them get closer as well. I loved seeing Momo learn more about her psychic powers and get stronger, I cannot wait to see her get as strong as we saw her in the beginning. Oh, and then there is Okuran who is using Turbo Granny’s powers though it leads to him being both depressed and epic. XD
Oh, and I am still wondering if I like Momo’s grandma or not. On the one hand, dang that is one grandma (both in design and her powers), on the other hand, what is up with that grandma?
Haha, I have to say that while I love the anime, I am also enjoying the manga a lot because you cannot hear Okarun, his voice is SO whiny and annoying. Really punchable! I hope that as the anime continues it gets better.
I really like the art style of this manga, it so fits with the chaos and weirdness of this one.
All in all, I will definitely be continuing this delightful, silly, weird, over the top manga (and anime) and I would recommend people to check it out~
