I understand why this was written. It is a very beautiful story. I think it could have been just a bit better if it was written in chronological order… I found myself being taken out of the story because I had to figure out where I was in Tembi’s life. I also feel like this is a lot of stories in one which ended up hurting the really beautiful parts. I also feel like Tembi often used fancier words to maybe make it more elegant? But really just, again, took me out of the story. Overall, it’s a lovely story, just told in a format I wouldn’t have put it in and with bigger words than needed.

I picked this up because I lived in Sicily and loved it. And I also love food. But this was so, so much more than that.
I was nervous that - because the cover image is a young couple - it was going to be a book about life from someone with a year or two of grown up experience. I have a particular disdain for the hubris of young relationship experts, but I was quickly disabused of my cover-based concerns.
The book is about death, grief, love, and building a life and finding a meaning through it all. The author has some fantastic insights and I really love how she brings so many cultural threads together in a way that highlights their origins and distinctiveness while also celebrating our shared humanity. This is a really good book - which I personally enjoyed because of the Sicilian parts and her experiences on overcoming grief as we near the one year anniversary of my kid sister’s death from a brain tumor - that I think shows how life is better when we have a better relationship with death.

Initially engaging but slowed down and I had to encourage myself to finish
To know this story was true made it all the more beautiful. I appreciate Ms Locke for her vulnerability, we are all made richer from it.
I enjoyed this memoir. From meeting her husband to his sad passing; from feelings of anger at his family to love and respect for his mother, the author leads us gently through all of it. I especially loved her stories of three summers in Sicily and how she began to fit into the community there.

I’m not much of a “foodie” so all the talk about food was not very interesting to me. Still, I really enjoyed the story of the families and communities from different cultures with their various customs. All in all, a pretty good read.
Bonus: For those who are into it, there a lot of good sounding recipes at the end of the book.

This took a while to read because it was just so sad to fathom. But the more I got into it, the more I kept wanting to read it.
Not a great page turner, but an important message of change while also staying true to yourself.
