Ocean at the End of the Lane is not much of a stretch from Neil Gaiman’s previous novels, it’s classic Neil Gaiman, but that’s a great thing. It has a similar feel to Coraline and the Graveyard Book, but I think I like this one most of all. The villain is wonderful, completely unexplainable and deliciously evil, she reminds me very much of a Miyazaki villain, and is handled similarly, without a sense of condemnation or judgement. Her actions aren’t personal, she’s just doing what she does. I also love the sense of order and boundaries in his world. It may be an adult book, but I think any kid would benefit from reading Ocean at the End of the Lane.

i don’t support this man anymore i just wanted to read my best friend’s favorite book back when (she also doesn’t support him anymore). what a wasted talent, this book is great to be honest, this man created worlds and characters that are so good they comfort you (good omens) and help you through storms (good omens) and ruined it just like that. people think it’s okay to do things as long as no one is looking and that’s not right, we hold them accountable because fuck them. always believe the victims, they’re so brave for speaking up and sharing. this is trauma, be sympathetic.

I LOVED this book! A great dark fairy tale that excellently captures the emotions of childhood. I read it in 2 days. So great! Read it!

DNF. Tried listening to the audiobook for a school book adoption committee, but after finishing the podcast on the allegations against Neil Gaiman I cannot listen to him read this book
mysterious sad medium-paced

Two and a half stars. This book was beautifully written, the descriptive language was a pleasure to read and the author’s imagination is impressive. But the story was a bizarre fantasy, a genre that just isn’t my cup of tea. If that’s your thing, you will likely enjoy this book immensely and give it a solid four or five stars.

I kissed the book when it was done with me.

Lawd I love me some Neil Gaiman. I don't know another adult so perfectly in touch with the wonders and fears of a being a child. This book is hauntingly beautiful. It lacks the humor of some of his other work, but it makes up for that in its exceptional lyricism and its poignant reminder that though we may forget the details of the truly magical things we see, they still shape the person we become.

Hauntingly beautiful. Like others have said, this feels like a fairy tale for adults in the best sense. The characters are just wonderful and reading this book is like having an incredible dream while awake. Gaiman's writing always stirs me.
