These were okay, but I'm more a Brother's Grimm Fairy tale gal.
My favorite was "The Nightingale," and my least favorite was "The Snow Queen."

I had a difficult time getting through this one. I just thought the stories were boring. The Little Mermaid was the best one and it led the anthology, so it was downhill from there.

I read The Little Mermaid. This was my first time reading the story that Disney eventually made into a very-changed movie.
I was initially intrigued to read the story having seen the San Francisco Ballet production on PBS a few weeks back. And I was even more intrigued when I read Hans Andersen based the Prince on a Prince he had feelings for.
The story is beautifully told, and the imagery is quite vivid, but still vague enough that you can picture things for yourself as your imagination would paint them. And at the same time, once the mermaid falls in love with her Prince, the story is incredibly sad. And the ending is depressing and nice at the same time.
I don't know if I would read this to my child while they're young and don't understand the themes, but I would definitely let them read it when they are older. It's a heavy story for little kids to understand. But it's a great story.

Simple and yet delightful! Reminded me of the time when I fell in love with Alice in Wonderland and all the magically strange places and scenarios. I especially loved the first story about the demon and the looking-glass. It could make a great retelling source material in my opinion.
