Fascinating and detailed account of self-sustaining life, partially outside the cash economy. The Nearings were clearly extremely principled folks. While I may not agree with every principle they espoused, I have so much respect for people who dedicate their lives to living their values. They put in a lot of work to prove that their vision of the world is possible, at least to some degree.

Also, I will probably reference this book in the future for cold climate gardening and composting tips.

An interesting, if not entirely practical, account of two of the original "back to the land"-ers.

It was interesting and a subject I am totally into, but it was a bit too technical. Couldn't finish it. More of a how-to with lots of numbers and measurements. And that kind of specificity is only applicable to that region of Vermont so the knowledge isn't usable elsewhere, for the most part.

One couple's life of self-sufficient living.

Very intriguing, simple life style. Toil in the morning and pursue your passions in the afternoon. love it. There is more to it, but it has been a while since I read it.

Excellent book that inspired a movement of homesteaders and people wanting to live off the land self-sufficiently. While I didn't agree or resonate with their philosophy 100%, there were still plenty of pages to dog-ear, lots of great ideas, interesting quotes before every chapter from other writers, and both breadth and depth of inspiration for living a self-sufficient life style.

This volume is two books in one, Living the Good Life and Continuing the Good Life. I've finally gotten around to reading these books by heroes of the 60s/70s. The reading is easy and the books are full of useful information and inspiration (although we will never be such ideologically pure homesteaders). The preachy tone was sometimes a bit irritating.

Interesting, although not my kind of lifestyle - however, the socialist philosophies of the authors really bothered and annoyed me.
