I have never been more surprised by a plot twist until this book

4/5 ⭐️

I honestly loved the vibe of this book. There is one scene during the first 150 pages that reminds me of Katniss Everdeen, ifykyk!

I loved the side characters the most honestly! Tipp and Mot were such unique characters that had me laughing the whole way through. Tipp is such a cute young boy who really did not deserve to be in such a terrible Prison and overall environment. He was such a sweetheart.

Kiva was definitely an interesting main character. I liked that she was a survivor at heart and was so kind to everyone she could be. She was given an impossible task and an even more impossible fate. She was so strong and resilient even if she doubted herself!

Honestly that plot twist at the very end had me reading the sentences over and over again just so i could understand what happened. I’m so confused but yet it makes so much sense when i look back but then also doesn’t make sense to the character arc that was started for this character. i loved the fact that it caught me so far by surprise though, i never would’ve guessed it AT ALL. I won’t go so into detail because i want you all to experience it the same way i did, but good lord it was great!!

Oh and Jarren, he’s getting added to the book boyfriend list ASAP!!

Actually loved the plot, nothing came as a chock and is disappointed me sooo much that she couldn’t survive a single test on her own… like you want me to think she’s strong? Like nope. She’s not. Everything was so obvious and there wasn’t really a great answer to anything. Do think I will read the next since she’s the rebels daughter? Idk what happened there at the finish line. But such a weird book

There were a lot of tropes in this that I think are overdone right now in the genre, but I do think this book worked within those tropes really well without being overly reliant on any of them. The plot twists at the end... I saw one of them coming but NOT THE OTHER WOWWWEEEE. So it has to get high marks because I the gasp I gusped was too loud for it to get any less.

The concept of this book was so unique and different from anything I have ever read before. The setting of being in the death prison was so interesting. I also loved Kiva being a healer that aspect of the story was very unique and fascinating. I was surprised how quickly I fell in love with all of the characters in this book. Omg the plot twists and last 100 pages were absolutely crazy with Kiva and Jaren being sent to the punishment block, Jaren being crown prince, Kiva having healing powers, finding out Kiva is the rebel princess and that Tilda was her mom. Overall the concept and plot was amazing and I really love the characters and the found family aspect. Jaren getting punished because he saved Kiva was heart wrenching. I love the elemental magic, the tournament aspect, the prison setting, the characters, the plot everything was just perfection. I can't wait for the next book and I have a feeling this is gonna become one of my fav series.

“If you weren’t getting information,” Kiva croaked out, “and you were never a real prisoner, then why didn’t you just leave?” His blue-gold gaze locked on hers. “Because I found a reason to stay.”

This was my favorite book of 2020 (maybe 2019 I can't recall the year) and so in order to continue the series I had to reread it after such a long gap. Having read it before, my commentary below is going ro be full of spoilers as I don't have any first impressions to share.

holy cow, even knowing the ending and actively listening for the moments where it could have been revealed, it was so so hard to see how i could have seen that final two sentences coming. Retrospect is the only thing that can make it clear. Kiva is so strong willed that even jer internal dialogue whoch we are privvy to doesnt link herself to her mother. I absolutely love when a book can hide their twists from me and this one is just so good at it. My heart broke for Tipp, thinking that the rebel queen reminded him of his mother, and he had to be there when she died. Like losing your mom twice. I think the biggest flaw I see in the story is just Jarren trying to save Kiva. He by all rights wants the rebel queen dead, so the easiest way is to let Kiva also die in the trials. Hes just too good a person and wanted that trial for his people too badly I guess.
