Man at times I couldn't put this book down, but other times, I almost put it down to never pick it back up.

I had a really big problem with the huge jump between characters. I was just getting interested in Tyen's story when suddenly we switched to a completely different character. I did get into Rielle's arc faster but then it jumps back to Tyen. This continues back and forth every so many chapters, and while the switch got easier, it never seemed smooth and always happened at the biggest cliffhangers. Which is fine, but when we got back to that character, it would be after the action. I just thought it odd to cut us off and then tell about the big drama moments after the fact.

The characters also killed me. They were so naive and passive at times that I didn't care about them but I also wanted to shake them so I guess that means I did care. Tyen grew on me more as the book went on. Rielle started off more interesting to me but there was a definite lull before the bang at the end.

I love the two different worlds built here. Rielle's world was particularly interesting to me. While there's no real connection yet between the two characters (beyond young and naive), there is a slim connection between the worlds that I think will have interesting implications in the next books.

I'll move onto the next book because I'm interested in what happens next but I do hope the characters get a little bit more agency of their own.

As all of Trudie Canavan's books - very well written. Loved the two protagonists and the settings, super imaginative and amazing magic mechanics. Was a little anti-climactic near the end but would still read the next one to see where it goes.

Also the cover is ...... interesting.

Whilst I enjoyed this book, there was something about it which I can't quite put my finger on that stopped it from going from good to great. I think perhaps that for a lot of the book it feels quite limited in scope (as opposed to the more epic kind of fantasy and science fiction that I usually read), but in the end it was intriguing enough to keep me reading, and I'll be diving into the second one in this trilogy shortly.

This book didn't suck me in the way the Black Magician Trilogy did, but it was still a good read. I must say I was much more interested in Rielle's story than in Tyen's until the very end, when his finale really knocked it out of the park. I hope the storylines will converge in the next book.

Maybe I’m overrating this book because I just came to Thief’s Magic after reading the first three Witcher books (I do not recommend), but I really enjoyed this book. I think it’s fantastic. The magic book that Tyen (one of the protagonists) encounters in the first chapter was a great hook that kept me enthralled while reading, and I was on the edge of my seat for most of Tyen’s chapters. The other protagonist, Rielle, also had an amazing story to follow, and the forbidden romance had me on the verge of tears for a lot of her chapters. The ending of her perspective in this book was bitter-sweet, but she had a satisfying moment of justice near the end and I can’t wait to read the next book to see how both hers and Tyen’s stories continue.

Trudi Canavan is my favourite author. That's why I was so excited for this one.
Unfortunately my expectations were too high. I lost interest halfway through the book because the story wasn't that appealing to me. A trilogy I won't finish..
