My son (age 14) did Not like this book, even though I skipped several sections in our read aloud and summarized them for him later (he couldn't stand the graphic descriptions).

I thought it was incredible, an epic tale for young readers.  The history and mythology of Persia combined with the experiences of an immigrant boy from Iran who gets bullied in Oklahoma... it's like a tale from an ancient man about a young boy (who is himself).  Heartbreaking and heart-affirming in that he uses the stories and the long, long historical context to weave himself into a bigger fabric, the long view, the possibility not just of survival but of mythology.

a very important read! the first hand tale of what it's like to leave your home country and everything you love and are proud of there and be transplanted into another country where nobody understands you, is racist and violent, and you experience poverty - told through the voice and narration of a child. So good!

This book made me SOB. I thought the 1001 nights structure was interesting, but I wish it had been more clearly established. There were parts I had to skip because the descriptions were graphic. It was a good book but I could never reread it. Did I mention I l’m sobbing?

One of the best books I’ve ever read. The storytelling is immersive and the writing delightful. Reading it was an experience.

Marked as fiction only because he relies on his memories and stories as opposed to documents. This memoir is beautifully written and exposes the pain, loss, love, and hope that comes with being a refugee. An emotional, eye opening story with bits of wisdom woven in throughout. Appears to be classified as a children's book, but I think this can appeal to all ages -- it is a more challenging read with the non-linear writing style and lack of chapters. While I think a young audience will enjoy the story, I do not know if they will truly be able to appreciate the beautiful use of language and careful prose in the book. The unusual lyrical structure was refreshing to read and made me feel like I was inside of the author's thoughts. I found myself highlighting and mulling over some sentences, causing me to think introspectively. Overall a delightful, heartbreaking, powerful book that I would consider a must read.
