I’m very impressed with how much this holds up! I watched the cyberpunk edge runners anime recently and the bones of neuromancer are definitely there. I think it’s cool how impactful this book is and the story itself was very interesting. Definitely worth the read

God this book is a struggle to get through. I loooove the setting and the importance this book has to the cyberpunk genre. But Jesus Christ I cannot stand the writing specifically the dialogue. Characters talk too familiarly with each other which ends up feeling very stilted and incomprehensible; the book badly needs a glossary as there is way too much exposition simply passed over in dialogue. Maybe I'm just not smart enough I don't know. I do however love almost everything about the setting descriptions. There are particular pieces of imagery that really stuck with me. One being an overcast sky at night resembling a static tv screen because of all the advertisements hovering in the city. Two is how a characters eyes seem to glow red with a stream of neon red as the street lights sweep over her ducking back into a shadowy doorway. Great stuff. I am going to give this book another go at some point.

wow! the first ever cyberpunk novel! incredible! 2 stars

Way too jerky writing style, extreme use of jargon. Might have invented the genre, but the writing is very bad, each page was either boring, confusing or infuriating. Could not get into the book at all, or care about the main character that thems lves cared about nothing.

Sweet sacks of sugar, I'm finally done! What a struggle! I did not care for the writing. I either had trouble visualizing what was happening, or had no idea what was going on. Sure, there were some interesting concepts, especially for the early 80s, but save yourself some time and skip to the last chapter. (I can't believe I said that about a book...) Ugh. Next!

Maybe I was too distracted to pay attention to the audiobook, but I just couldn’t get into the story, and didn’t care at all for the main character.

This is my second Gibson DNF (after The Difference Engine last year), so I’m done with this author.
