Heart of Fire by Bec McMaster

Dragons, dragon hunters, elemental magic, and a dreki court- this is everything you’re looking for if you’re wanting a bit of fantasy with a fierce female protagonist.

She who dares: Freyja confronts the elusive Dreki prince when he steals her ram. Captivated by her defiance, he sets about seducing her. The intimacies explore the difference between trying to own someone and trying to seduce someone. The foil being a local son who is trying to isolate, terrify, and starve her until she has only him to turn to. Whereas Her dreki is trying to find her heart’s true desire in order to win her trust. As with her other series, McMaster is exploring the concept of tenderness. What takes a relationship from raw physical attraction to love and tenderness for which you would sacrifice everything to protect?

What I love most about this first installment is how Freyja loves her dreki in both forms- his human and serpentine forms. In fact, as you read it, the form seems irrelevant to the way they interact and connect. The fluidness hints at a deeper level of connection and acceptance that draws the two characters together, speaking to the part of each of us who really wish to be seen.

Finally- what is Freyja? Not human, but something in a human form. While I appreciate setting up the mystery that will take us through the rest of the series, I always resent when young women are kept in the dark of their own powers. Ignorance is never ever protective. Knowledge is power and I always bare my teeth when authors take a really powerful female character and then leave her at the mercy of the male characters who always know more because she was not told who she is or trained in her magic.

Nevertheless, I’m excited for the rest of the series as we follow Freyja on this journey to discovering what she is, the extent of her power, and her place as the new princess of the dreki court.

Good action, I liked both characters, but I wanted more from the ending, especially since book 2 focuses on another couple. What’s Freyja’s origin? Weird that that wasn’t answered.

This was a fast, but sassy, steamy read.
Was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

Would happily read more.

An enjoyable read

I enjoyed this story which took awhile to heat up and get to the ongoing storyline. The next book will determine if I continue reading the series.

There were some things that I found questionable. I felt some things were very obvious and found it frustrating when she didn't see what I so obviously saw but it was still a good read. I enjoyed the romance.

This book was a very interesting concept! I never read a book about Icelandic mythology and it was so cool! However, I did find it very slow at times and kind of boring. I did like Rurik and the next book's premise sounds very intriguing!
