Although this book was engaging as you read further along, the events of the synopsis do not begin to happen until very far into the book, around 200 page or so, so it makes the book feel very slow and unfocused. The main character is a child, so I would have classified this book as middle grade if not for the fact that I read it for a YA class, but the made up words and language and interwoven and difficult to explain concepts in plot make me think a child around the age of ht main character, who the story is likely targeted towards, would have had a difficult time understanding everything. Lyra is a very smart young girl, but because she is a child she also had moments where she acted very naively and childish, which was an odd contrast. This was fantasy of a caliber that I typically don't read, so its took me awhile to be able to identify the different races and species and customs and to recognize them by name.

I've been meaning to read this book series for YEARS. And when I say years, I mean it.
I got given some second hand copies a few years ago and I've been meaning to read them even more ever since. Finally, I've read the first one, and all I can say is @ PAST ME WHY DID IT TAKE YOU SO LONG?! YOU COULD HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS JOY MUCH SOONER!!

Lyra is a delight; what an excellent main character. I can't remember the last time I loved a character so much. The entire way through the book I was rooting for her, heart and soul. I loved the relationship she cultivated with Iorek, Serafina Pekkala, the dæmons, E V E R Y T H I N G.

I can't wait to begin the second book in the series - I have a copy of it and even though I'll be home tomorrow, I'm so desperate to start reading it that I'm seriously considering getting the ebook just so I can start it a little earlier.

5/5 STARS WOULD RECOMMEND.

Also, until now, I never knew quite what people meant when they trashed the film. Now I am with them /all the way/.

Huuuum.

I listened to the audio version of this book after reading it as a kid. I loved the audio version except for the voice of Lyra, which was essentially intolerable. Such a disappointment!
