Classic pulp from the period it alludes to and the insert pages represent. Okay, but more boys-own adventure than the usual Occult fare of Mignola. Back to Hellboy for me!

This was certainly not my favorite book by Hellboy creator, Mike Mignola. I must admit to not finding Lobster Johnson, a personality-free pastiche of early 20th century pulp heroes to be that interesting a character, and here, in an entire story devoted to his two-fisted exploits, that did not change. The artist chosen to illustrate the story lacks Mignola's own inimitable and elegant style and can only clumsily replicate it. It is not bad by itself, but perhaps might have been better simply using the artist's own style. The plot and dialogues' aping of action serial tropes, complete with black and white morality, over the top events, and foreign cultists, also does not appeal. Sadly, for me "Lobster Johnson" lacks the spare, neo-folkloric storytelling of Hellboy and suffers for it. Of course, for those hungering for a pure attempt at 1930s pulp action with superscience, Nazis, and monsters, it would certainly not disappoint.

Una historia muy trepidante que engancha mucho. Los personajes rienen mucho carisma y la serie mucho potencial. Me han encantado los finales de capĂtulos con la verdadera historia de El Bogavante.

I can't wait to see what's in store after this super exciting first volume! Great to see more of the Mignolaverse -- and more Mignola art. :)
