There is some overlap/repetition in content, but I never minded when the essays were often words that I wanted to read over and over.

I don't think an audiobook is the best format for this.

"These are comic book solutions to biblical problems in nuclear times." This is just one among the countless quotable sentences in this book. Toni Morrison has a very distinct literary voice - one that is extremely calming and stern, but hopeful. I have not read Beloved or Song of Solomon yet, but I almost feel like I would enjoy the voice she takes on in essay form much more than fiction. I found her syntax and the flow of these essays very pleasing to read. At first, I started this through audio book (which I really did not like), but then switched to e-book and suddenly I connected a lot more with her words. The essay "The Slavebody and the Blackbody" especially resonates now with the taking down of Confederate monuments with the hopes of replacing them... The idea of representation and of presentation being essential to the creation of safe environments for people of color. I love the way these essays were put together as well. Each essay leads to the other purposefully and also kind of reflects how her mind ties together ideas about art and race and politics and gender so seamlessly as well. Overall, definitely a book I need to reread in the future and would like to keep around if anything to remind me how to have the incredible amount of hope she has for the future.
