Gravid (or pregnant) is the perfect word to describe this book. It's packed with symbolism, and I really liked how there were motifs connecting the two halves (spiders, barking dogs, gasoline smell, shivering in the cold). I interpreted the spider bite to represent in some way the damage done to a soldier's soul by participating and/or facilitating similar types of violent acts against civilians. The barking dog is obviously the screams of the victims who are silenced.
Obviously the book would not be the same without the second half/POV, but I found the stylistic choices made in the first half/POV to be more compelling. The refusal to name the soldier means he could be any soldier, he could be every soldier; the author doesn't let you get away with feeling relieved that oh it's just this made up character, named X, committing this terrible act. His anonymity almost makes him a reader stand-in character, but in the worst way possible (horrific instead of vicarious). His contradictions (good intentions gone wrong by his own hand) & his seeming choice to try to forget everything that happened seem to reflect (& perhaps indict) parts of society.

one of the most hauntingly realistic works of literary fiction i’ve ever read!
This book is a reminder of the brutalizations the Palestinian people have endured for decades under the occupation.
Minor Detail embodies what we are all witnessing in realtime, written with vivid detail to capture both the indifference of the occupier and the fear of the occupied.
