Kapaktaki kırpılmış bölümler, bir şeyleri hafifletmek için hazırlanmış belli. Ama yanlışınız var, o küçük bir ayrıntı, işin aslı şu: 104 sayfalık koca bir kayanın altında kalmak...

DID NOT FINISH: 13%

I wanted to read other things at the moment, not saying the book was boring, because I’ll definitely pick it back up soon, but now wasn’t the time!

"Sometimes, it’s inevitable for the past to be forgotten, especially if the present is no less horrific."

I have no words...
Haunting.

I really wanted to love this but I couldn't even finish it. The writing was so dull that I couldn't be immersed in the story. I dnf'd at the second part. I thought the first part had a great premise, in fact the whole story sounded like something I would love but it was so tedious to read that I just needed to stop reading.

This was a good read! I've been wanting to read books by Palestinian authors, and this is the first one I chose. The story was interesting and very important, but I found the writing to be rather straightforward (I prefer more flowery writing). This is a very hopeless story, and knowing the fate of Palestine right now already had me feeling quite hopeless. This was a very important read and it gives a lot of insight to how Palestinian's have always been treated by Israel since the very beginning of their occupation.

This is a novella that is very very difficult to rate. I would describe the reading experience of this book as anxiety inducing, however that was absolutely the goal of this novella, which means it was very effective. It's only 100 short pages long, but it is filled with stuff that leaves you thinking and feeling a lot.

I think part of what made it so effective, was that we were so deeply in the character's heads, especially in the second part. All of the various atrocities and horrors portrayed are written in this almost... clinical way that adds a level of disassociation and distance from it that makes it all the more effective. In the second part, the main character describes bombings like it's the weather, and getting guns pointed at her by IDF soldiers like dealing with a mean dog. The absolute normalization of it all adds to this hollow hopelessness that so effectively sets in after seeing everything that happened in the first part.

Slowly seeing parallels build between the two women through out the course of the story had a deeply bone-chilling effect on me. It made me so certain of how it was going to end, and seeing that exact ending play out was truly an experience.

The one issue I had with the book was more in the formatting of it. The long, long, long, paragraphs that stretch on for quite literally two pages was rather difficult for me to read. I understand the choice behind them and I think that it was effective to the story's benefit; but I still found it to be kind of distracting when I kept losing my place and struggling to stay focused on such a long segment.

But yeah, Minor Detail is one of those books that explores the evil of what's happened in Palestine, without ever directly saying "these are bad people doing bad things and what is happening is bad" it just shows us. This is a very very effective example of showing and not telling. Shibli delivered everything so clearly and vividly, that it makes you feel very deeply.
