The best portrayal of an autistic character I have ever read.

Truth be told, I am always a wee bit wary of the “robot as a paradigm vessel for the autistic experience” trope because SO many writers get it SO wrong and just end up doing more harm than good.
However, as Wells herself is neurodivergent and has stated previously that much of the MC’s interior monologue/nature and responses to their environment were inspired by her own experiences, I simply have no choice but to stan. It all felt very organic and relatable. Not to mention the asexual and genderqueer representation! Along with POC, queer and poly rep for the SC.
Chef’s kiss. No notes. Cannot WAIT to read the rest of the series. Rooting for this strong, independent SecUnit 🦾

I don’t usually read sci-fi, but I went through this story in one sitting. I do love stories about androids/non-human entities exploring the concept of consciousness and being human. This was definitely a good mix of fun, tense, thoughtful, character building, and world building.

I see the appeal of this - fast paced, action packed sci-fi novella with a funny and sarcastic protagonist. I certainly enjoyed it; I finished it in two sittings and it helped me get out of my reading slump. However, I don't think there was anything particularly amazing about it.  Don't go in expecting a deep dive on the ethics and philosophy of robotic autonomy and free will etc.,  just appreciate it for what it is; a pulpy fun adventurous sci-fi murderbot romp.

I received a copy of this novella from a friend for a buddy read, and I couldn't be more thankful for that, because it was a delight to read.

The premise of the series, as well as the world-building are great, and the style of writing is very engaging. I was hooked almost immediately, and the only disappointing thing about it was that it ended too soon. However, that just means I have to read the next installments of the series, which I hope are just as good.

I'm not usually a fan of stories written from the first person point of view, but in this case I really enjoyed reading about Murderbot's thoughts, opinions, and its interest in watching soap operas.

I have to admit, I was confused by all the names of the human characters for at least half of the story, and I kept mixing them up constantly, but once I got used to them everything was a lot easier to follow. As far as human characters are concerned, Gurathin is my favourite so far, followed closely by Ratthi.

I love Murderbot to pieces and I can't wait to read more about it and about its adventures.

I’ve been told I would love this, and boy were you right Tif. Murderbot is a partially-organic security unit for a survey team on another planet. It has hacked its own software and has secretly gone rogue, but still does its job because it likes its humans. There is a thriller/mystery element, and Murderbot is so incredibly relatable. Some might not, but I personally absolutely loved the ending and I’m very curious to learn more about this futuristic sci-fi world. I will definitely be continuing the series (they are quick reads; the audiobooks are only about three hours each)

This novel is a great introduction to Murderbot! It is a very enjoyable narrator! It's motivations lean towards protection despite having a hacked Guardian drive that doesn't allow them to be compelled to do so, and it comes to care for the crew it's been assigned to. This series reminds me of Becky Chambers, though I believe Murderbot Diaries was published before the Wayfarers series. Queerness in outerspace with a nonhuman narrator, of whom humanity isn't expected is the way to my heart. I especially love the aro-ace coding of the narrator. I know robots as allegories for a-spec people is a tired stereotype, but I enjoyed reading it, nonetheless, having Murderbot's lack of external sexual organs line up with his interior experience of attraction was neat!
