Beautiful and nuanced.

These poems have a simpler style than what I usually gravitate to, with more obvious morals in the final lines. I liked many of them, especially ones in the final section, but Campo's descriptions of himself as heroic doctor fell flat (and the unnuanced anti-obesity going on in them).

Favorite poems include "Elegy for a Revolution," "Batteries Not Included," "Promnesia," "Recent Past Events," "Views of Heaven," and "The Golden Age of Venetian Painting."

Throughly enjoyed Alternative Medicine. I read this class for an LGBT Poetry class and intend to write my final paper on Campo's work because this collection simply resonated with me. His unique perspective as a gay man and medical doctor offers a deeply emotional, and often heartbreaking, window into the horrors of the AIDS epidemic and the deadly consequences of oppression. At the same time, Campo reminds readers of the depths of the importance of poetry and art in the healing process, both for the soul and for the body.
