The recording of this book is Moshfegh in her own voice. I was again bowled over by her talent for writing and now reading her own work. This old world setting takes us to a village of a medieval realm. The characters are richly drawn and Moshfegh pulls no punches as she explores the deep essence of humanity through lenses of brutality, neglect, class, religion and midwifery. This ain't for the faint of heart. No ifs, ands, or buts. Just buckle up. There is a lot to appreciate here.

El inicio me pareció muy interesante. Tenía curiosidad en ver cómo evolucionaría la trama de la corrupción y fanatismo religioso, pero el desarrollo ha sido bastante irrelevante.
No me incomodan en absoluto las partes escatologicas o crudas, pero esperaba más que eso.
Creo que la obra es aplaudida precisamente por el “morbo” de lo que comento pero, honestamente, para mí se ha quedado en una historia muy superficial.
Me hubiese gustado que desarrollase con más intención los puntos fuertes que sí tiene.

These characters were all gluttons for punishment just because they felt it was a means for survival. Their beliefs felt so backwards that it gave no room to ever enjoy life. Those that did try to enjoy life, did so at others expense and went to extremes.
I don’t have too many thoughts on this other than how important it is for people to be educated. Those that aren’t are at risk of corruption and are at the mercy of their rulers.
Story was wild. I 100% believe this kind of thing happens to this days in areas where masochism is normalized and confused for virtue.

a perversely written book that uses shock to build up the plot - it doesn’t work and although it was easy to read, it was not an interesting plot. the medieval themes were engrossing to some degree, with themes surrounding witchcraft and religion being the only real substance in the book. shame it felt somewhat wasted as the plot developed.
medieval grotesquity, religious horror and subversiveness, also this taps specifically into the medieval concept of pleasure in suffering which is right in my niche, and plays with the concept in a grotesquely humorous manner, tragedy and nihilism, really digging into the morbid nature of human belief, this is so loaded, good lord the content warnings. all the characters are reprehensible so it was strangely heart warming in a weird way the queer undertones of the lord and the priest being gay LMAO <\spoiler>
