This was a quick and fun read. And I really loved this woman's sense of humor!
Find myself indulging in rather melodramatic fantasy of Bentley crashing into enormous motor-bus and being splintered into atoms. Permit chaffeur to escape unharmed, but fate of Lady B left uncertain, owing to ineradicable impression of earliest childhood to the effect that it is wicked to wish for the death of another. Do not consider, however, that severe injuries, with possible disfigurement, come under this law - but entire topic unprofitable, and had better be dismissed.

Also, as much as many aspects of this woman's life terrifies me (apathetic husband, over drafted accounts, gossip in a small village) I still totally relate to her on some names...namely this:
He only esquires whether I have my passport? Am perfectly aware that passport is in my small purple dressing case, where I put it a week ago, and have looked at it two or three times every day ever since - last time just before leaving my room forty five minutes ago. Am nevertheless mysteriously impelled to open hand bag, take out key, unlock small purple dressing case, and verify presence of passport all over again.

(Query: Is not behavior of this kind well known in therapeutic circles as symptomatic of mental derangement?)

Delightful! If Bridget Jones were a wife and mother in the 1930s. A likeable, unglamorous, ordinary character with whom many can empathize. The tone of delivery is perfect: exasperation at husband and anxiety over the domestic country life's many little vexations, without ever getting too woe-is-me that we would find her tiresome. So many keen insights into human behavior / society, that if persona were on Twitter today, she would be a hit. Wish I had read this sooner. The title makes it seem boring but this was a quick weekend read.

I read the July 5 2023 review of this in the Washington Post by Michael Dirda and thought "I have that!". It's a 1982 reprint by Academy Chicago. That's why I like having a library.

Fun light read. I would have had a hard time being a woman in 1931 though.

Delightful, as Persephone books always are! I really enjoy reading diaries like this one, of average normal lives.

Well, that was a slog and I'm glad it's finished. This isn't to say I didn't enjoy the book, because in actual fact I enjoyed most of it, but it was hard work getting through it all.
It's a funny, witty book, written from the perspective of a woman as she recounts her life in her diary. I think because it is a diary on someone's life the pace is very slow and I found I was hooked or eager to find out what happened next - there's no plot in a diary, after all. So it took ages to get though.
The edition I read comprised of all 4 books and I found I didn't enjoy the last book at all. By this point I was bored and it didn't interest me.
Glad I read it but also very glad I can move onto a new book. One I can get through quickly because it grips me.

I wanted to enjoy this, but Hyacinth Bucket did it better. And whomever suggested that this was in any way comparable to Wodehouse was sadly misguided. 2 stars for the moments I smirked where there should’ve been laughter.
