My son picked this as his summer reading book so I re-read it with him. His review "it is awesome and silly!"

This counts towards the Goodreads Summer Reading Challenge Task #11: Re-read a book you loved when you were younger.

I just remembered this book and really enjoying it as a kid. Very glad I had some access to Scots, to be honest, which wasn't a lot back then.

What a pleasure it is to be able to share a favourite from childhood with your own child.... this was possibly my first Dahl, certainly the first I recollect.

My son is now 5, and we read this first at bedtime (it only took two/three to manage the short chapters), and then after that we also read it in the car, as an audiobook (with Richard Ayoade a great choice of narrator).

Quentin Blake's illustrations are no less ingenius with the passing of time - Mr Twit's beard a standout picture from my own early years. My son loved them too, 'urgh'ing at the right moments and loving the one-upmanship of this loathsome couple.

As an adult, you do see it in a different way - just WHY are Mr and Mrs Twit married when they clearly can't stand each other? Just what happened in their lives to make them so hideous? And is my child going to copy any of their tricks and give me worms on a plate?!

It's structured in two halves, one half introducing the Twits, their tricks and their complete unlikeability. The second half focuses in on the monkeys and their attempt to escape and save the birds from Mr Twit's glue and Bird Pie.

My son kept asking for more chapters, and I think his favourite moment was the scene in which the boys are caught in Mr Twit's glue and have to escape courtesy of a cheeky picture by Blake - he mentions this scene all the time.

And 'the dreaded Shrinks' now forms part of his gleeful vocabulary. Couldn't be happier.

The audiobook is one hour long, great for journeys and with short chapters, easy to stop every few minutes. Ayoade gives the Twits voices I wouldn't have used myself, but they work perfectly well, and he's a personable narrator that adults will enjoy listening to as well.

This is the perfect introductory book to Dahl for younger children (ages 4 and above) - it shows his humour and lots of disgusting fun, is nice and short for concentration, and will have them wanting more. Where else will you see grown-ups in children's fiction behaving so immaturely?

We started with The Magic Finger and the Enormous Crocodile and have since listened to Charlie. Dahl is going to be as much as staple of my son's childhood as he was of mine, and I think he'll be all the better for it.

I wonder if this will ever become a film... Why am I picturing Jim Royle right now...?

Very short read for school, after talking to some students about this book before the Christmas holiday I fancied a refresh and something light to read.

Oh dear this book is problematic. Although Some background reading on Dhal will highlight some major issues, this book highlights many of his societal views that I do not agree with.
