This book had me in its grip from the very start. I had to speed up my listening at the end because I couldn’t put it down. The  age gap and it just being explained away by “wolves being different” was kind of weird as were the smut scenes but I still loved this book and thought it was incredible.

Alright so. This is probably a 4 star for me.
I really enjoyed this. I liked the slow, gradual approach to everything and that we learned about the world as he did. The friendships and family bonds happened gradually as well, just like with everything else. It felt natural. Even his relationship with Joe which was "mystical moon magic" we saw develop through the years. However, on that note, the lack of development after Ox finally sees Joe and realizes his attraction is unsatisfactory. They have what, a week, before everything happens and they are separated? Would have liked a bit more. But even that could have been fixed by after they come back together they build their relationship again? Spend time together? Yes they did spend time together and have to build a relationship again but it was mainly Ox having to let go of his anger. Which is totally justified btw. I don't like that some of the characters were calling his feelings "ridiculous". But whatever. They take time to come together again which I liked, that it wasn't an instant thing. But after? There wasn't an after. We didn't get to see their relationship after. We didn't get to see how they work as a couple, them going on a date, them doing anything besides the really short claiming scene at the end which I also didn't love since Ox didn't bite Joe? I felt like should have both bit..but meh. I would have liked a little more into the after. Onto another aspect, I didn't agree with every choice characters made but you almost never will. But for Ox, sometimes his thought process irked me. Him blaming the wolves, even a little. Not just after the death right then but even years later he still feels it a little. I didn't like that. But at the same time it shows how human he is? How imperfect he is? Ox or even Joe, neither are perfect characters without flaws. They are still great characters regardless. So I can't fault Ox for that even though it made me a little uncomfortable. Anyway. I'm happy Ox finally found somewhere he belonged. A family who accepts him fully. A place he belongs, as pack, as alpha. It still isn't fully but that'll time time and it's okay. He mostly accepts it now. The position really suits him. He earned it. And as mates. Joe will make sure Ox is the happiest person there is, same with Ox towards Joe. Joe will never let Ox think himself as less, he's the perfect person for him. So yeah, despite a few complaints I enjoyed this book.

I was so disappointed by this book since I love under the whispering door and house in the cerulean sea so much. The writing, especially the dialogue, made me almost DNF this so many times.
“Blah. Blah” I said.
“Blah blah” he said.
“Blah. Blah” I said.
“Blah blah” he said
“Blah. Blah” I said.
“Blah blah” he said.
Did TJ Klune forget there are words other that said to describe dialogue? There were hardly any descriptors in this book at all. Also the word ‘and’ must have been used 8000 times.
“It was cold. And. It was wet. And. It was rainy. And. There were no lights. And. The wind was blowing. And….”
Such awful writing in honesty in shock. Maybe the audio book made this seem worse?
I was also really shocked how vulgar this book was. There was a very explicit sex scene and some pretty extreme lusting over a teenager. Again, I love Under the whispering door and the house in the cerulean sea and neither of them had sex scenes that I can recall. I will not be reading any more of this series, and probably not any more TJ Klune either.

This book is weird and gross and has some scenes that are so pornographic you wonder if you’re reading something completely different. I knew this book wasn’t going to be like TJs more popular book but I didn’t know it was would be like this.

I have never in my life read a book that feels so much like fanfiction. There's a certain type of ridiculousness that is usually reserved for AO3 that I found in abundance her, and I think for many that may be a deal breaker; however, with that absurdity comes the readability also typical of that platform, which for me sort of balanced things out. There is definitely some problematic stuff here (particularly regarding the age gap in the romance), but if you're able to get past that and turn your brain off a little, this is a really fun time.

I loved most of this story. The things that weirded me out or almost made me dnf was how much Ox thought of Joe always as a little boy or a young teen, usually in sentimental and intimate moments. I know what Klune was going for, but it didn’t quite land right with me.
Nor did the way Ox’s dad spoke to him. There’s zero mention that I could find that the R-word would be used so heavily in the first 60 pages. Again, I get that his dad was trash, but could he have used another method to describe that he viewed Ox as “simple and dumb.” hell, I just did 😒
Also, Ox is anything but simple and dumb 😡
