I think I expected more from this book. It surely has an interesting story to tell but I was just lost in the whole story when I was reading it. And that's not good. It has too many characters and I was lost with them too. Overall, I liked it but it was just not enough.

I had really high hopes for this book because of the family mystery/mythology combo, but this one was just very very slow (which I have a feeling might be a translation issue). I got through about half the book and very little happened plot-wise.

The subject was interesting. However, it was a collection of socialist era reports strung together as both the main character and the reader figure it out - together. I HATE reading reports. This style did not work for me... as much as I wanted it to.

That felt like an impossible read. Interesting in parts, slow in others. Fairly convoluted, not easy to follow and half the time there’s a lot of “wtf is even happening rn?!” Genuinely disliked the long rambling reports, which were key to so much of the narratives. Very blah, very much disliked. Even worse was that you had to pay attention, because the key plot point would be hidden somewhere in there, but god, you had to read the whole damn boring thing to figure out what it was. There was much work in reading this book, and if you weren’t keen on doing the work then you basically had no chance for understanding what was going on, because they didn’t recap, they just assumed you understood the significance of what you just read.

It’s also SUPER grim, no happy endings here, just a lot of misfortune over and over and over, in a myriad of different ways. So grim.
