I was very uncomfortable with how this author seems to be setting up a romance between an opressor and the oppressed with some sort of redemption arc for a character with eugenecist beliefs. Based on reviews, it sounds like this does not improve later in the book so Im putting it down before I lose it. Also some eyebrow raising choices around race and ethnicity. I dont know that anything I read rose to outright racism, but given the current state of the world it felt like a Choice to have an Englishman oppressed by Chinese people, and to make all immigrants in this world physically dangerous to locals.

I just want to yell about this book to whoever will listen now. It's clever, funny, emotional without being mawkish, and features some truly original worldbuilding. I adored it.

I WILL READ ANYTHING NATASHA PULLEY WRITES.  "The Mars House" is her newest one and it's science fiction and gloriously queer.  It's about the difference between nice and good and how power differentials come in many forms, and how culture and language intertwine.  It has a good helping of emo yearning and is also a great twist on the sham marriage romance trope.  The main character is January, a ballet dancer from Earth forced to be a refugee on Mars when London finally floods entirely who is then caught up in global politics against his will when he sarcastically threatens a Mars Senator on live camera.    The sense of humor is glorious (especially in the footnotes), I would die for the baby Mastodon, and I read multiple passages out loud to Nyx.  Don't sleep on this one.
