I love reading C.S. Lewis and this was a delightful and relatively short read, even if I didn't always understand what was being said. There are portions that go above my head, and he sometimes uses references that might have made more sense some decades ago. These are no fault of the author but Moreso the fault of me not being an Englishman from the 50's with a background in literature. He goes in depth about his childhood and the many things he suffered and psycho analysis his past self in trying to develop a chain of events that led to how he was mentally as a kid to the him that is writing the autobiography. He admits to not understanding everything and to not always knowing exact dates and does skip things he does not deem relevant. The only fault I see in this work is that he skips more the older he gets so that much of his adulthood is little more than a few pages compared to the much greater amount of material describing his time before and during his schooldays which seem to loom large and terrifying in his mind. This was also a great historical text and brought to my attention, in a seemingly raw and unprocessed way, what childhood was like in the early 20th century England.

This book made me feel as if I was getting to C.S. Lewis personally, and I was pleasantly surprised to find I could relate much with his feelings. His analysis of himself is suberb, and his telling of the way God finally corralled him is wonderful.

I am definitely going to need to read this one again! I listen to the audiobook version and there were so many nuggets that I would like to reread, underline, and visually see. I was motivated to read it after hearing that it had inspired an album by The Gray Havens called Blue Flower. It was kind of nice having the music and book connection!

I am in love with this story and utterly in awe. It’s so incredible. I feel that I need to discuss it with someone to appreciate it even more. This is a very special book and I feel so moved by it. It’s one that I need to read again and again to remember what I learned here and also to see even more than I did the last time. A favorite forever, and I see it as a pillar or cornerstone of books for me. It points me back to my North Star. It checked me — and now I’m checkmated. And I’ve never been more happy to be so.
