3.5 stars. I’ve been reading Megan Miranda’s books since she first started writing YA, and her ability to create a tightly woven and yet compelling story is as good as ever. Such a Quiet Place had the right amount of atmosphere and tension, set in a seemingly idyllic neighborhood that was shattered by the deaths of two neighbors a little over a year ago. Twenty-six year old Ruby has returned to the Hollow’s Edge neighborhood fourteen months after her conviction for the double homicide was overturned, back to the home of her roommate, Harper.

Harper is surprised and confused by Ruby’s return. Ruby is met with great hostility from the other neighbors, and Harper is caught in the middle, especially since no one understands the reason for Ruby’s return. While Harper isn’t the most likable character, neither is Ruby. My biggest complaint is the lack of connection or empathy for any of the characters.

Things really get interesting after the halfway mark, however, and there is more to the mystery and these neighbors than is originally perceived. The ending was certainly a surprise, too. I enjoyed this one.

I’ve read three of her titles happily this month alone. I simply couldn’t find myself getting invested in these characters or the plot. I won’t be picking this one up again.
